What is complex trauma?

Complex trauma is repeated, prolonged exposure to traumatic events such as abuse and neglect, often taking place within the nuclear family or extended family during childhood. These events are interpersonal, involving intentional acts by other human beings; often the person who should provide care and protection. This has a long-lasting and profound effect on a child’s emotional and psychological development, and the repeated, ongoing nature of these experiences often amounts to what we call “developmental (complex) trauma”.
